Asian Games 2026 Opening Ceremony: Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat Lead India’s 501-Member Contingent

Asian Games 2026 officially got underway on Saturday with a spectacular high-tech Opening Ceremony at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, setting the stage for one of Asia’s biggest multi-sport competitions. The two-hour ceremony brought together athletes, officials and dignitaries as the continental sporting extravaganza formally began after a turbulent buildup.

The ceremony was attended by several members of Japan’s royal family, including Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko. Olympic Council of Asia president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani was also present at the event.

With the Games now officially underway, attention has shifted towards the sporting competitions, where athletes from across Asia will compete for medals and national glory.

The ceremony took place in the presence of Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, alongside other members of the royal family. The president of the Games and OCA president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani were also among the distinguished guests.

The Games have attracted widespread attention following a chaotic buildup, but the Opening Ceremony provided the formal launch for the competition.

India’s 501-member contingent will be led by Olympic double medallist Manu Bhaker and star kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat during the athletes’ parade.

Olympics, has been given the honour of leading the Indian contingent at the Opening Ceremony. Her selection comes after a landmark Olympic campaign that established her as one of India’s prominent athletes.
