BRICS: Building for Resilience, Innovation and Sustainability

India is set to host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026, bringing together leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping to advance cooperation on resilience, innovation, sustainability and development.

BRICS has grown significantly in both scale and diversity and now comprises 11 nations, representing approximately 49.5% of the global population, 40% of global GDP and 26% of global trade.

India's current BRICS Chairship has focused on delivering practical and inclusive outcomes for the Global South. Over the course of the chairship year, more than 350 meetings were held across 25 Indian cities, reflecting India's effort to broaden participation and strengthen cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic forums.

People-Centric Priorities

A key feature of India's BRICS agenda has been its emphasis on people-centric cooperation. Discussions have included proposals for new platforms and initiatives covering mental health, healthy lifestyles, traditional medicine and youth cooperation.

These areas reflect India's push for a more inclusive and solutions-oriented approach to multilateralism—one that connects international cooperation with issues directly affecting communities, young people and public well-being.

India's Role in BRICS

India has previously chaired BRICS in 2012, 2016 and 2021. The 2026 chairship further strengthens India's role in shaping the agenda of the grouping and promoting cooperation among emerging economies and countries of the Global South.

As leaders gather in New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit, the focus is expected to remain on strengthening resilience, encouraging innovation, expanding economic and people-to-people cooperation, and advancing sustainable development.

The summit represents another opportunity for BRICS to translate its growing economic and demographic weight into practical cooperation and shared solutions for a changing world.
