Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project Gets Adani-DGPC Deal
The Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan has moved a step forward with Adani Power and Druk Green Power Corp. Ltd. (DGPC) signing a Shareholders Agreement for the development of the 770 MW hydropower project.
DGPC is Bhutan’s state-owned generation utility, and the new agreement marks another major collaboration between the two partners in the country’s hydropower sector.
Second Major Hydropower Partnership
The 770 MW project is the second major hydropower collaboration between Adani Power and DGPC.
It follows the agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project signed in September 2025.
The Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project also forms part of the broader 5,000 MW hydropower development Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Adani Group and DGPC in May 2025.
Project Located in Bhutan’s Zhemgang District
The peaking run-of-river project will be developed on the Chamkarchhu River in central Bhutan’s Zhemgang District.
The project will be implemented under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer, or BOOT, model.
Adani Power-DGPC Equity Structure
Adani Power and DGPC will develop the project through a 49:51 equity partnership.
The project will have a concession period of 30 years from the Commercial Operation Date.
Construction Expected to Begin in 2027
Construction of the Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project is expected to begin in the first half of 2027.
Commissioning is targeted within six years from the start of construction.
The project is expected to strengthen Bhutan’s clean energy generation capacity while also supporting deeper regional energy cooperation.
With the latest agreement, Adani Power and DGPC are continuing to expand their hydropower partnership under the larger 5,000 MW development framework.
