Chinese Firecrackers Seized by DRI, Worth ₹12 Crore
Chinese firecrackers seized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence were valued at approximately ₹12 crore after officers uncovered large quantities of pyrotechnic fireworks concealed inside containers imported through Chennai Port.
The operation followed specific intelligence developed by the DRI’s Hyderabad Zonal Unit, which indicated that Chinese-origin firecrackers were being illegally imported by misdeclaring them as other goods.
Firecrackers Misdeclared as Stationery and Other Goods
According to the DRI, the consignments were declared as items such as stationery products, medical gloves, plastic clips, hair bands, storage wardrobes and shoe racks.
Acting on the intelligence, DRI officers examined suspected containers in separate coordinated operations.
During the searches, officers found large quantities of Chinese-origin pyrotechnic fireworks concealed behind cartons containing the declared cover cargo.
Seized Fireworks Valued at ₹12 Crore
The seized fireworks were collectively valued at around ₹12 crore.
The Chinese firecrackers seized during the operation had allegedly been imported without the required licences and through misdeclaration and concealment.
Import of Firecrackers Is Restricted
The import of firecrackers and fireworks is restricted under India’s Foreign Trade Policy.
Valid authorisations are required from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation under the Explosives Rules, 2008.
Action Taken Under Customs Act
As the fireworks were imported without the necessary licences, the consignment was seized under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
The operation highlights the action taken by enforcement agencies against restricted goods entering the country through misdeclaration and concealment.
