Chelsea Win The Club World Cup

by Kolkata Today

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea beat Palmeiras 2-1 in Club World Cup final to lift trophy for the first time in their history; Romelu Lukaku headed Chelsea into a second-half lead before Raphael Veiga restored parity, taking the game into extra-time; Kai Havertz scored last-ditch spot-kick to seal victory

Havertz was the hero in Porto and he was the hero again Saturday night , crowning an enterprising performance in our attack with an ice-cold penalty five minutes from the end of extra-time.

Chelsea have now joined Bayern Munich and Manchester United as the only clubs to complete a clean sweep of major UEFA trophies and the Club World Cup, and as the 11th different winner of this competition the Blues are only the third to achieve that feat from England.Thomas Tuchel’s team just keep rewriting the history books!

The decisive spot-kick was awarded for handball, the second such decision during this slow burner of a game in Abu Dhabi.

Chelsea had taken the lead through Romelu Lukaku but a Thiago Silva handball led to Chelsea’s Brazilian opponents equalising.Thomas Tuchel’s team then long looked destined for a penalty shoot-out and who would have been in goal for that given Edou Mendy began this game but Kepa had already been successful in three shoot-outs for his club this season? In the end, a Palmeiras palm and Kai’s coolness meant that was not necessary.

37-year-old Chelsea’s Thiago Silva has been named Player of the Tournament at the Club World Cup.

Chelsea’s Kai Havertz said ,”It’s amazing. After champions of Europe, we are now champions of the world. It sounds better.

I was nervous [taking the penalty], I have to be honest. It’s a big penalty. It’s just crazy. It was good I kept the nerves. I am very happy.

I was the third penalty taker but I was the only one left on the pitch.

My team-mates gave me trust. I dreamed always as a kid of this. This is an amazing feeling for me.”

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said ,”It never stops. We want to keep on winning trophies.

In the end if you score late you need luck to do it, but we were relentless and we did not stop trying.

We did not give in. We had the lead then lost it but never stopped. It was deserved but also lucky when you score late.

The penalty does not look nervous [from Kai Havertz] but for sure he was. You cannot not be nervous in this situation. We trusted the statistics and I’m happy for him.”
