Ravi Kumar Dahiya , Vinesh Phogat and Naveen secured Gold on the final day of the wrestling programme as India won a medal in each of the 12 categories.
Ravi took Gold in the men’s freestyle 57kg with a 10-0 win over Nigeria’s Ebikewenimo Welson, with the bronze medals going to Canada’s Darthe Capellan and Ali Asad of Pakistan.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya said, “I feel great to have won the Gold medal. It is always the biggest, proudest thing for my country.
“The final match against the Nigerian [Welson] was great, as he has a couple of medals from the past Commonwealth Games. It was really nice to win the gold medal this time.”
India’s youth wrestler Naveen celebrated his Commonwealth Games debut with victory in the men’s freestyle 74kg after he overcame Muhammad Sharif Tahir of Pakistan 9-0 in the final.
Nigerian Ogbonna Emmanuel John and Canada’s Jasmit Singh Phulka took bronze.
Naveen said, “I am feeling very good and happy for winning the gold medal for my country. It was a very good match. My opponent is also very good.
“I am new in this weight category and gold has made me very happy.”
India’s triple joy was completed by Vinesh Phogat taking Gold in the women’s freestyle 53kg as Canada’s Samantha Stewart had to settle for silver.
Vinesh Phogat said ,”It was a good feeling when people were supporting us (inside the stadium).Today I was able to execute what I learned during my training &will try to continue my good performance in upcoming competitions.”
Miesinnei Mercy Genesis of Nigeria took women’s freestyle 50kg gold after a narrow 3-1 win over Canada’s Madison Parks.
Pooja Gehlot of India won bronze after beating Scotland’s Christelle Lemofack Letchidjio.
Genesis said: “I’m feeling so excited. It was amazing. I’m so happy to win the Commonwealth gold medal – it’s been a great pleasure.
She was relieved to get the better of training partner Parks and added: “She’s good and she’s been someone I’ve been training with. Everything at the Games has been perfect and I’m very happy. I hope one day I will be able to come back to Birmingham once again.”
Justina di Stasio of Canada earned gold in the women’s 76kg with a 4-2 victory over Nigeria’s Hannah Amuchechi Rueben.
Georgina Nelthorpe of England and Pooja Sihag of India took the bronze medals.
Di Stasio said: “She [Rueben] was so strong. I’ve been working on my two-on-ones today and she closed that out, so we had to switch to another hold and adjust on the fly. It’s good to know I can do that.
In the final category of the night, Nishan Randhawa of Canada beat South Africa’s Nicolas de Lange 9-3 in the men’s 97kg as the North Americans also medalled in all 12 categories.
Deepak Nehra of India and Australia’s Thomas Barns claimed silver after victories over Tayab Raza of Pakistan and Maulalo Willie Alofipo of Samoa.
