CWG 2026 Day 2 Highlights: Australia Tightens Grip on Medal Table

The second day of the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 delivered another exciting chapter, with nine gold medals awarded across six sports and several memorable performances lighting up the competition.

Australia continued its dominance by producing the first podium clean sweep of the Games in the Men's 400m Freestyle before adding four more swimming gold medals at Tollcross International Swimming Centre. The impressive haul strengthened Australia's position at the top of the overall medal standings.

The netball competition also got underway with title contenders Australia, New Zealand and England all opening their campaigns with commanding victories over Tonga, Northern Ireland and Scotland, respectively. Uganda secured the closest contest of the day, defeating Wales 59-50 in an entertaining encounter.

In artistic gymnastics, Australia's women's team clinched gold after Kate McDonald's outstanding score of 14.200 on the uneven bars helped her side finish 1.100 points ahead of Canada. England claimed the bronze medal after edging past Wales.

One of the biggest surprises came in Women's 3x3 Basketball, where tournament debutants Tonga stunned hosts Scotland. The victory was made even more special by sisters Mele and Leslia Finau, who played together for the Pacific Island nation. Mele described the experience of competing alongside her sister as both inspiring and rewarding.

Meanwhile, Fiji's Rajnesh Prasad produced one of the most dramatic moments of the day in the bowls competition. He defeated Scotland's Jason Banks in a tense last-bowl tie-break to register his third consecutive victory in the Men's Singles event, keeping his unbeaten run intact.
