Full-back Daniel Alves this Friday became the oldest Brazilian to play in a FIFA World Cup match. The record was set in the 1-0 defeat against Cameroon in the final round of Group G games. At 39 years and 210 days, Alves eclipsed the record set by his team-mate Thiago Silva in Brazil’s opening match at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, who played Serbia aged 38 years and 67 days. Before Qatar, the oldest ever footballer to play for Brazil at the World Cup was the full-back Djalma Santos, who played Hungary aged 37 years and 138 days in 1966.
Daniel Alves was in the starting line-up in the Group G match against Cameroon at the World Cup Qatar™. With Brazil already through to the last 16, head coach Tite decided to rest some of his key players and sent out a second-string team. First-choice right-back Danilo got injured in Brazil’s first match at World Cup 2022 and is trying to recover in time for the knockouts. In the second game, against Switzerland, Eder Militao took his place. And in the third round of matches Daniel Alves was selected. With Thiago Silva on the bench, Alves captained the team against Cameroon, in recognition of his experience for the national team
Daniel Alves is taking part in the third World Cup of his career. The right-back was in South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014, and only missed out on Russia 2018 after picking up a serious injury shortly before the tournament kicked off.
Alves is expected to be back on the bench for the round-of-16 encounter against South Korea, on Monday. Even so, his experience may be called upon at decisive moments throughout the tournament. Despite the defeat in the last round of Group G matches, Brazil finished top of the section thanks to their superior goal difference to Switzerland. The two teams finished level on six points.
