Indian archery has witnessed a landmark moment as Dhiraj Bommadevara became the first-ever Indian male recurve archer to win individual gold at the Archery World Cup Final.

The 25-year-old Army archer, ranked World No. 10, produced a remarkable performance in Saltillo, Mexico, overcoming Japan's World No. 20 Nakanishi Junya in a tense five-set final that went down to a dramatic shoot-off.

The triumph ends a 16-year wait for an Indian male recurve medal at the season-ending Archery World Cup Final. The last Indian man to reach the podium at the event was Jayanta Talukdar, who won bronze in Edinburgh in 2010.

Bommadevara's achievement also places him in an exclusive group of Indian archers to win an individual Archery World Cup Final title.

He joins Dola Banerjee, who became the first Indian to win an individual World Cup Final crown when she claimed the women's title in Dubai in 2007.
