This time the festival of Chhath Puja will be celebrated from 28 to 31 October. In this fast which lasts for 4 days, devotees keep fast for 36 hours continuously. During this, they follow many strict rules. Although this festival is mainly celebrated in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, but in other places also people’s faith towards Chhath festival (Chhath Puja 2022) is seen. There are many stories related to this festival. According to the beliefs, Goddess Sita in Tretayuga and Daupadi in Dwapar Yuga also observed this fast. Today we are telling you about the stories related to this fast-

King Priyavad started Chhath Puja
In Satyuga there was a king named Priyavad, but he had no children. His wife became pregnant by Putreshti Yagya, but she gave birth to a dead son. When King Priyavad went to the crematorium with his dead son, at the same time Goddess Shashti appeared there and took that dead child in his lap and brought him alive in the game itself. After this the king said that- Rajan, you worship me and inspire other people too. The king did the same. That day was Kartik Shukla Shashthi Tithi. Since then the tradition of worshiping Shashthi Devi i.e. sixth Maya is going on.

Ram-Sita also worshiped the sun god
According to mythology, Lord Shri Ram and Goddess Sita also performed Chhath Puja. According to the legend, after the victory of Lanka, when Shri Ram came to Ayodhya and took over the reign of the kingdom, Lord Shri Ram and Mother Sita fasted on Kartik Shukla Shashthi and worshiped the Sun God along with Chhathi Maiya. After this, he performed rituals again at sunrise on Saptami and got blessings from the Sun God. Since then the tradition of Chhath festival is going on.

Sun worship was also done by Draupadi
A story of Chhath Puja is also associated with the Pandavas. According to him, Draupadi and Pandavas used to worship the Sun daily during their exile. The Akshaya pot with which the Pandavas used to eat and get others to eat, that too was given to them by the Sun God. During his exile, he also fasted for Chhath Puja every year on Kartik Shukla Shashthi Tithi. Due to the effect of this fast, the Pandavas got victory over the Kauravas and their lost glory returned.

Surya’s son Karna worshiped the Sun God
According to another legend, the tradition of worshiping the sun god during Chhath fast was started by Danveer Karna. Karna was not only the son of Surya, but he was also a great devotee of the sun god. Danveer Karna used to stand in water for hours every day and offer Arghya to the sun. Suryadev was very pleased with his worship. On Chhath Puja, Karna used to give charity to the needy according to his wish. He became a great warrior by the grace of Surya.
