The film does not touch on those issues. Apart from that everything goes very smoothly in London for both the struggling main characters. This is strange. There is no emotional moment in the film that will leave you stunned. The characters are also crafted properly.
Actress Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi have been victims of body shaming early in their career. That is, they have to bear the taunts of people regarding their weight, obesity. This was the reason that Huma decided to make a film on this subject. This is Huma’s first film as a producer.
Tug of dreams and reality
The story is of Rajshree Trivedi (Huma Qureshi) of Meerut. Rajshri, who is going to be 30 years old, wants to become a sports presenter. Her father and grandmother have no problem with her obesity. Her mother is worried about her marriage due to her growing age. At the same time, Rajshree’s call comes from a sports channel. The mother makes a condition that if she is not selected, she will get married.
On reaching Delhi, Rajshri is disappointed as she is rejected on the basis of photographs without taking an interview. While there, he meets Saira Khanna (Sonakshi Sinha). She is also fat like him. She wants to launch her own fashion label. Both have dreams, but the obstacle in that is their obesity. Will both be able to fulfill their dreams while defying obesity? The story is in this context.
Weak story on relevant issue
Writer Mudassar Aziz and director Satram Ramani have raised a very sensitive and relevant issue. Due to obesity, people often have to become the object of laughter. There was a time in Hindi cinema when fat people were taken only for comedy. Earlier, the pain of a fat girl was also depicted in the film Dum Laga Ke Haisa. It takes courage to make such films. Because to play these characters, the heroines have to gain weight apart from their petite, slim physique. Huma Qureshi and Sonakshi both put on weight for the characters. His intention behind making this film is also good.
However, the writer and director could not go into the depth of the subject. Writers need to put in extra effort to understand the characters of small towns. He has taken a long time to establish the two characters at the beginning of the film. However, he is very weak in incorporating the main issue into the story. Rajshri and Saira only communicate on the problems of obesity, its effects on their lives are not visible on screen. Even this film does not talk deeply on the problems of people suffering from obesity. The cause of obesity can also be due to any disease along with irregular diet.
This film does not touch on those issues. Apart from that everything goes very smoothly in London for both the struggling main characters. This is strange. There is no emotional moment in the film that will leave you stunned. The characters are also crafted properly. Why didn’t Rajshri post them despite making the video? How much did he try locally? All this is not clear in the film. Saira’s past has also not become effective. If you had worked hard at the writing level, it could have turned out to be a better film.
Don’t sympathize with Sonakshi’s character
Huma has honestly tried to imbibe Rajshree’s struggle and innocence. At the same time, Sonakshi’s character may be suffering from the pain of obesity, but seeing her styling and living style, she does not have any sympathy. Zaheer Iqbal as Zorawar Rahmani has some comic scenes in his part. They are ineffective. Debutant actor Mahat Raghavendra impresses in the character of Srikkanth.
At the same time, Shobha Khote suits the short role of Dadi. Kanwaljeet’s character is seen busy only reading Dainik Ujala newspaper. Alka Kaushal in the role of Rajshri’s mother beautifully conveys the feelings of anxiety, insecurities of a middle-class mother’s girl’s marriage. Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan and former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev have cameos in the film. The music of the rest of the film is very simple.
