Former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan will contest the upcoming General Elections as
the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Candidate from Berhampore. This was announced by
the party supremo Mamata Banerjee while declaring the names of all 42 candidates for
seats in West Bengal.
Berhampore, the administrative headquarters of the Murshidabad district, is currently
held by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Notably, the Congress Party is yet to
name a candidate for the seat, but Chowdhury is likely to seek a recontest from
Berhampore that he has represented five times in the Lok Sabha.
While announcing the list of candidates, TMC on Sunday dropped at least eight sitting
MPs and brought in several new faces such as Yusuf Pathan, Rachna Banerjee, and
Kriti Azad.
The Trinamool Congress has renominated 16 sitting MPs and fielded 12 women. While
cricketer Yusuf Pathan will contest from the Berhampore Lok Sabha seat, Kirti Azad will
fight from the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency, and Rachna Banerjee from Hooghly.
Yusuf Pathan’s brother Irfan Pathan who is himself an Indian cricketer took to X to
congratulate his sibling, and wished him luck in his political journey.
Yesterday, the Trinamool Congress launched its poll campaign for the Lok Sabha
Elections 2024 with a grand rally where party supremo Mamata Banerjee announced
the candidates for all 42 seats at the Brigade Parade Grounds and many candidates for
the forthcoming elections appeared along with the party leader. Abhishek Banerjee,
general secretary of the party was also present and addressed the gathered crowds.
The prime focus of the rally was to address the issue of the alleged withholding of the
state’s financial dues by the central government, which has dominated state politics for
over 2 years and has been the focal talking point for the TMC.
