Maharashtra political crisis:Maharashtra political turmoil is nowhere near its end. Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has now called for a floor test on Thursday. While Uddhav Thackeray has moved the Supreme Court against the floor test, the rebel MLAs are slated to go to Goa from Guwahati today.
Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government Wednesday cleared a proposal to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv. Faced with a vote of confidence that is likely to take place Thursday, the renaming is seen as an effort by the Shiv Sena to burnish its hindutva credentials in what could be its last major decision in the 31 month-old Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government. The Shiv Sena’s decision to rename the two cities comes at a time when it is facing a serious political crisis with a large chunk of the party MLAs having deserted the Sena.
Chief Miniy Uddhav Thackeray thanked his colleagues after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday. He said, “Thanks for all the help. My own people betrayed me. So this situation has come up.”
Uddhav Thackeray said all three parties had come together and did good work in the last two-and-a-half years. “Tomorrow, a vote of confidence will take place and it will be decided if it’s the end or not,” said NCP leader and Maharashtra minister, Jayant Patil.
Cabinet minister Sunil Kedar said CM Uddhav Thackeray had no prior administrative experience and yet he tackled the Covid-19 pandemic.
“He underwent critical surgery. Who has started working within a month of undergoing spinal surgery? Give me one name. This man did that. Even the PM told him that he showed strength. If such a man faces deception, then we would like to know if the people would think about it,” he said.
