The Sandeshkhali area has been in the news since the beginning of the year and unrest has intensified over the past 10 days as women protestors have sought justice against alleged atrocities committed on womenfolk by TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his men.
A large number of women in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district have accused Trinamool Congress local leader and strongman Shajahan Sheikh as well as his supporters of “land-grabbing and sexually assaulting” them under coercion.
Shajahan Sheikh has been absconding since early January, when an ED team that went to investigate him was attacked by a mob consisting of individuals allegedly affiliated to him. The apex agency went to Sandeshkhali on January 5 to investigate Sheikh and his premises in connection with his alleged role in the ration scam.
