European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has revealed details of a high-level conversation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, highlighting growing concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East and their potential impact on global economic stability.
According to von der Leyen, the leaders discussed the evolving situation around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. She emphasized that Iran’s actions in the region are posing significant risks to international trade and energy flows, raising alarms across global markets.
The European Commission President stressed that the EU and the UK will work closely with international partners to ensure that freedom of navigation in the region is restored swiftly. The disruption of maritime routes, particularly in such a strategic corridor, could have far-reaching consequences for global supply chains and energy security.
In addition to security concerns, the discussion also focused on the upcoming EU–UK Summit, which von der Leyen described as a “key moment” to deliver on last year’s commitments and further strengthen cooperation between the two sides. The summit is expected to play a crucial role in shaping post-Brexit relations, particularly in areas such as trade, defense, and geopolitical coordination.
The renewed engagement between Brussels and London signals a pragmatic approach to shared global challenges, with both sides recognizing the importance of unity in addressing security threats and maintaining economic stability.
