As many as 41 workers are trapped in a tunnel that collapsed in Uttarkasi. Portions of the Silkyara tunnel
in Uttarakhand collapsed owing to a landslide trapping the workers who were working there. Since then,
rescue operations have been on to evacuate them safely. The Minister of Road Transport and Highways,
Nitin Gadkari arrived at the tunnel collapse site to conduct an inspection and investigate rescue
measures being taken for the evacuation. Giving an update after the inspection, he said, “Efforts are
continually being made for the safe evacuation of all the workers. We have involved specialists from
abroad. Food and vitamin supplements are being administered to the trapped workers. They are dealing
bravely with the situation and their morale remains high.” He was accompanied by the Uttarakhand
Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami.
On Day 10 of rescue operations, some workers appeared on camera for the first time and the visuals
were released, giving relief to everyone, particularly their families. In the footage, the workers wearing
the yellow and white helmets were seen conversing with the rescue team while accepting food items.
