INDIA Bloc Protest March: Vijay Wadettiwar Targets SIR Process
The INDIA Bloc protest march has intensified the opposition alliance’s campaign over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar raising allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanding changes to the process.
Speaking in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Wadettiwar said the march had been unanimously decided by INDIA alliance parties and called for what he described as shortcomings in the SIR process to be rectified.
Opposition parties have organised protests against the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions, while the Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations that the process has been manipulated for political benefit.
Vijay Wadettiwar Raises Concerns Over SIR
Wadettiwar alleged that Gyanesh Kumar was acting at the BJP’s behest and said the SIR process needed to be “cleansed” and its shortcomings corrected.
He said:
“The SIR process must be cleansed, its shortcomings must be rectified, and vote theft must stop.”
These are allegations made by the Congress leader; they are contested politically and have not been established as fact.
INDIA Bloc Demands Action Over Electoral Process
Wadettiwar said the INDIA Bloc protest march was being held with demands related to the SIR process and what opposition parties describe as the need to protect the fairness of elections.
The opposition alliance has also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the withdrawal or review of the SIR exercise.
Wadettiwar further alleged that the SIR process had been used to influence elections in Bihar and West Bengal. Those claims remain allegations by the opposition and are disputed.
‘Electoral Process Must Remain Free and Fair’
Emphasising the importance of electoral integrity, Wadettiwar said that in a democracy, the electoral process must remain free and fair.
He also claimed that protests had begun across the country and said the INDIA alliance had decided to continue pressing its demands against the government and the Chief Election Commissioner.
Recent opposition demonstrations have centred on allegations of irregularities in voter lists and demands for greater transparency from the Election Commission.
The INDIA Bloc protest march therefore remains part of a wider political confrontation over electoral roll revisions, with opposition parties demanding changes while the Election Commission maintains that its procedures are being carried out within the legal framework.
