India and Japan on Thursday unveiled a comprehensive package of strategic initiatives, including a new economic partnership framework and a defence pact to jointly develop military hardware, following bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The two leaders also announced new measures to deepen cooperation in critical sectors such as energy security, semiconductors, quantum technology, advanced materials, and supply chain resilience.

Addressing the media after the talks, Prime Minister Modi said the economies of India and Japan are highly complementary and rooted in shared values.

"The economies of India and Japan are complementary. From cultural values to modern technology, there is similarity in our thinking and approach as well. Above all, the foundation of our relations rests on unbreakable mutual trust," he said.

The Prime Minister announced that both countries have prepared a joint roadmap for economic security aimed at strengthening resilient supply chains in strategic sectors, including semiconductors, quantum technologies, and advanced materials.
In the energy sector, the leaders launched the India-Japan Bio-Gas Initiative, under which 1,000 bio-gas and organic fertiliser plants will be established across India. The initiative is expected to promote sustainability, improve rural livelihoods, and support India's clean energy goals.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is on a three-day official visit to India, reflecting the growing momentum in bilateral ties.
India and Japan elevated their relationship to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. As both countries prepare to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, cooperation continues to expand across trade, investment, defence, economic security, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges through more than 70 institutional dialogue mechanisms.

Prime Minister Modi last visited Japan for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in Tokyo in August last year, with the annual summit remaining the flagship platform for advancing the strategic partnership.
