The Americans looked in control after Folarin Balogun finally broke the deadlock just before halftime, calmly finishing after a fortunate through ball from Malik Tillman. Balogun had earlier seen one effort ruled out for offside and was also denied by the crossbar before the break.
The match took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a high challenge on Tarik Muharemovic, leaving the hosts to play with ten men for the remainder of the contest.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Mauricio Pochettino's side defended resolutely and sealed the victory in the 82nd minute. Malik Tillman, who had earlier provided the assist for the opening goal, curled home a superb free-kick shortly after Christian Pulisic had a goal disallowed for offside.
The victory sends the co-hosts into the Round of 16, where they will face Belgium at Seattle Stadium on 6 July. The USA will be aiming to reach the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for only the second time in the modern era.
