FICCI President Highlights Data Centres and Semiconductor Opportunities
KT- Anant Goenka

India-Japan partnership is expected to open up significant opportunities in emerging technology and infrastructure sectors, with data centres, renewable energy and semiconductors emerging as key areas of potential growth, FICCI President Anant Goenka said.

Speaking about the future of economic cooperation between India and Japan, Goenka highlighted the growing importance of technology-driven infrastructure and the opportunities available for Japanese companies to expand their presence in India's rapidly developing economy.

Data Centres Emerge as a Major Growth Opportunity

According to Anant Goenka, data centres represent one of the largest potential areas of growth under the expanding India-Japan partnership.

The rapid growth of digital services, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other technology-based applications is expected to drive increasing demand for data centre infrastructure. India, with its expanding digital economy and large consumer base, is positioned to become an important market for the sector.

Goenka pointed to several factors that could support the development of data centres in India, including access to renewable energy, land availability and opportunities to build redundancy into power supply systems.

Renewable Power and Infrastructure

The availability of renewable power could become an important advantage for India's data centre industry.

As data centres require substantial and reliable electricity supplies, access to multiple sources of power can help operators maintain continuity while also supporting sustainability goals.

Goenka noted that India has opportunities to provide renewable energy as well as alternative sources that can ensure redundancy in power supply. Such infrastructure could be particularly important for large-scale data centre projects.

Land availability is another factor that could support future investment. The combination of suitable land, power infrastructure and India's growing technology ecosystem could create favourable conditions for expanding the data centre sector.

Semiconductor and High-Tech Sector in Focus

The semiconductor and high-tech sector was another major area highlighted by the FICCI President during discussions on the India-Japan partnership.

Semiconductors have become strategically important for economies across the world because they are essential components in smartphones, automobiles, electronics, telecommunications equipment and advanced industrial systems.

India has been seeking to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem by encouraging investment, developing manufacturing capabilities and expanding research and technology infrastructure.

Scope for Greater Technology Cooperation

The growing cooperation between India and Japan could create opportunities for companies from both countries to participate in high-tech projects and supply chains.

Japan has considerable experience in advanced manufacturing, electronics, materials and precision engineering, while India offers a large market, an expanding technology workforce and a growing manufacturing ecosystem.

Goenka indicated that some areas of cooperation already have a high level of maturity, but there remains considerable room for further expansion.

India-Japan Economic Ties

The India-Japan partnership has evolved across several sectors, including manufacturing, infrastructure, technology, energy and investment.

Emerging areas such as data centres and semiconductors could add a new dimension to this economic relationship.

For India, attracting investment in advanced technology and digital infrastructure could help strengthen domestic capabilities while creating employment and supporting innovation.

For Japanese companies, India's expanding market and manufacturing potential offer opportunities to build operations at scale.

Future Growth Potential

Goenka emphasised that even in areas where cooperation between the two countries is already relatively mature, additional growth opportunities remain.
