“People Should Become Dependent on India”: Ashwini Vaishnaw’s Semiconductor Vision

Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has outlined an ambitious vision for India’s semiconductor industry, saying the country should aim to become an indispensable part of the global supply chain.

Speaking about India’s semiconductor ambitions, Vaishnaw stressed the importance of building domestic capabilities across production, design and industry, so that global markets increasingly depend on Indian expertise and output.

“People should become dependent on our country, on our industry, on our production, on our design,” Vaishnaw said.

He said this should be a collective national objective involving the government, industry and India’s growing community of semiconductor professionals.

Vaishnaw also pointed to the sector’s expected growth in India, saying the country could account for close to 10% of the global semiconductor industry market in the coming years.

According to the minister, India’s role could become even larger as the domestic semiconductor ecosystem expands, positioning the country as a significant player in one of the world’s most strategically important technology sectors.

The broader ambition is clear: India wants to move beyond being a consumer of advanced technology and become a critical producer and designer within the global semiconductor ecosystem.
