KT- India Vietnam Relations

India Vietnam Relations received fresh impetus as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The two leaders held productive discussions covering defence and security cooperation, energy, rare earths, space, bilateral trade, investment and the deep cultural and civilisational ties between India and Vietnam.

The meeting highlighted the importance of strengthening the India-Vietnam partnership across multiple strategic and economic areas. Both sides discussed ways to expand cooperation and create new opportunities for closer engagement between the two countries.

India Vietnam Relations Focus on Defence and Security

A key area discussed during the meeting was the further strengthening of defence and security cooperation between India and Vietnam.

The two sides discussed the proposed 2+2 mechanism, which is aimed at creating a structured platform for dialogue between the two countries on important strategic and security matters.

Proposed 2+2 Mechanism

The proposed mechanism could provide an additional avenue for India and Vietnam to exchange views on regional and global security developments while deepening institutional cooperation.

Defence and security have remained important components of the broader India-Vietnam relationship. The latest discussions underline the continued focus on expanding strategic engagement between the two countries.

Cooperation in Energy, Rare Earths and Space
Another major focus of the meeting was expanding cooperation in emerging and strategically important sectors.

India and Vietnam discussed opportunities in energy, rare earths and space, three areas that are increasingly important for economic growth, technological development and strategic resilience.

Energy Cooperation

Energy remains an important area for international partnerships, and greater India-Vietnam cooperation could open avenues for collaboration in areas connected with energy security and development.

The discussions reflected the shared interest in exploring new areas of economic and technological cooperation while strengthening existing bilateral ties.

Rare Earths and Space

Rare earth elements are increasingly important for modern technologies and industrial applications. Cooperation in this sector could contribute to stronger supply chains and new economic opportunities.

Space was another important area discussed by the two leaders. India and Vietnam can explore greater engagement in space-related technologies, research and other areas of mutual interest as both countries continue to develop their capabilities.
