India’s largest airline, IndiGo, on Tuesday announced the appointment of former International Air Transport Association Director General William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals. Walsh, a veteran of the global aviation industry, is set to conclude his tenure at IATA on July 31 and is expected to join IndiGo by August 3. His appointment comes less than three weeks after the sudden exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers. Popularly known as Willie, Walsh has previously served as CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG), which operates major carriers including Aer Lingus, Iberia, Vueling, and Level. Welcoming the move, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia described Walsh as an “iconic and accomplished aviation leader,” highlighting his global perspective, operational expertise, and customer-focused approach. The appointment signals IndiGo’s intent to accelerate its transformation and growth in the competitive aviation sector.
