Iran Rally Twice to Hold New Zealand in Thrilling 2-2 World Cup Draw
Iran came from behind twice to force a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in a politically charged Group G encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Iran's team staff were denied visas and they had to shift base to Mexico as USA gave them permission to enter the country only on matchdays due to recent geopolitical tensions between the two countries.
But at the Los Angeles Stadium, they fought hard to eke out a point even after falling behind twice.
Chris Wood set up Elijah Just’s seventh minute opener, before Ramin Rezaeian levelled in the 32nd minute.
Just bagged his brace following some glorious interchange in the 54th minute to restore New Zealand’s advantage, only for Mohammad Mohebbi’s header hit back again 10 minutes later.
Iran next face Belgium on June 21, while New Zealand tackle Egypt as all four teams are level on points after the first round of matches.
