Mexico Icon Guillermo Ochoa Hints at Retirement After Historic Sixth World Cup
Legendary Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has said he is certain to retire from international football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 40-year-old is one of only three players alongside Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo to appear in six World Cups and saifld he is set to
bring the curtain down on a career spanning more than two decades.
"With the national team, it's 100% certain. This will be my last tournament," Ochoa told Mexican broadcaster TUDN.
"Retiring altogether could also be on the cards. We'll see how things unfold, but I'm aware this chapter is coming to an end," he said.
Regarded as one of Mexico's greatest goalkeepers, Ochoa has been capped more than 150 times since making his debut in 2005.
His performances against Brazil in 2014 and Poland in 2022 made him attain cult status among football supporters around the world.
He started on the bench for Mexico's opening 2-0 victory over South Africa.
"To finish in a World Cup that Mexico is hosting is something very special. Few players get to write an ending like that," Ochoa said.
