Japan makes World Cup history, new low for Tunisia rout
Japan set a new standard for Asian football at the FIFA World Cup in their 4-0 win over Tunisia, scoring the most goals ever scored by an Asian country in a men's World Cup match victory.
Japan began theit campaign with a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. But on Saturday they registered a record victory as in 151 previous matches featuring AFC teams, no nation has ever scored four goals in a match in what was the 1,000th game in the tournament’s history.
Daichi Kamada scored Japan's first goal tin under five minutes, Ayase Ueda later doubled the lead, finishing with a brace.
Tunisia exited after two successive defeats in what is their seventh World Cup appearance.
But they also have never lost a World Cup match by four or more goals, until they lost 5-1 to.Sweden and 4-0 to Japan.
"We didn't know exactly what the opponents would do, but we didn't focus too much on them. Instead, we prepared well for what we wanted to do and played aggressively," Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu told DAZN.
"During our preparations, the coaching staff made it clear what we needed to do, and because of that the players were able to perform to their full potential. Many Japanese supporters came here to Monterrey, sang the national anthem with us and cheered us on loudly. Their support was a huge boost for us."
