Kharge remark prompts BJP complaint in Patna
A Kharge remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a BJP worker to file a police complaint in Patna on Sunday, according to reports citing police. The statement was made during a programme commemorating Bihar's first chief minister, Shrikrishna Singh.
Krishna Kumar Singh lodged the complaint at Kotwali police station on Sunday evening and demanded that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge apologise within 24 hours. A police officer said the complaint would move to Gandhi Maidan police station because the matter fell within its jurisdiction.
The programme marked the 139th anniversary of Shrikrishna Singh's birth. Kharge had spoken about sending people allegedly responsible for irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls to jail.
His response came after someone in the audience said Modi would not leave without a rebellion. Kharge then made a retort referring to Modi's father, drawing criticism from the BJP.
Electoral roll dispute forms backdrop to exchange
The Kharge remark also prompted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to criticise the Congress president on X. Shah alleged that the reference to Modi's father breached acceptable standards of political speech.
He linked the incident to earlier personal comments directed at the Prime Minister and his family. Shah further alleged that electoral setbacks had left the Congress relying on attacks rather than policy arguments.
The BJP issued its own statement condemning the language and attacking the Congress leadership. Its criticism also referred to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi's recent overseas travel.
The parties remain at odds over the electoral roll revision. Congress alleges that the exercise disadvantages minorities and marginalised groups, while the BJP accuses it of undermining constitutional bodies, including the Election Commission, to explain its election losses.
