LK Advani hospitalised in Delhi with chest infection, condition reported stable
With LK Advani hospitalised for a chest infection, the 98-year-old former deputy prime minister was receiving treatment at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi after his admission on Friday, October 16. His condition was reported to be stable.
According to reports, Advani reached the hospital in Jasola Vihar at about 7.30 pm. He was being treated in the pulmonary department, while the hospital indicated that a further statement about his health would follow.
The admission follows earlier treatment at the same hospital in May for ailments associated with his age. He was discharged after spending a few days there, reports said.
Earlier treatment and public life
With LK Advani hospitalised again, his recent medical history includes several admissions during 2024 at Apollo and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He received intensive care in December that year and left hospital on December 25.
The latest admission came nine days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met him at his Delhi home on October 7. Modi visited to seek his blessings as he completed 25 years as a head of government, having first become Gujarat chief minister in 2001 and prime minister in 2014.
Advani received the Bharat Ratna in March 2024. President Droupadi Murmu presented the country's highest civilian honour at his residence, with Modi and other senior leaders attending.
Karachi was Advani's birthplace in 1927; he relocated to India in 1947 amid Partition. He later became a leading figure in the BJP's expansion and headed the party on three occasions.
He served as home minister in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His tenure as deputy prime minister ran from 2002 to 2004.
