League Cup: Liverpool and Manchester City advance after penalty shoot-outs
League Cup holders Manchester City and Liverpool needed penalty shoot-outs to secure quarter-final places on Wednesday, October 28. Liverpool overcame Chelsea at Anfield after a 1-1 draw, while City emerged against Brighton following a 2-2 contest at the Etihad Stadium.
Chelsea took the lead through Morgan Rogers’ penalty in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo. Cody Gakpo replied from the spot three minutes later, with Wesley Fofana’s handball giving Liverpool their opportunity.
The deciding shoot-out brought several missed chances. Valentin Barco struck a post, Kostas Tsimikas sent his attempt over and Mike Penders stopped Gravenberch’s effort.
Giorgi Mamardashvili then denied Emmanuel Emegha to keep Liverpool in contention. Joe Gomez converted before Fofana missed, sending the home side into the next round.
City come through Brighton test
Brighton twice held the advantage against City. Malick Yalcouye redirected Georginio Rutter’s attempt into the net in the 30th minute, before Mateo Kovacic responded with a curling strike from distance.
Rutter put Brighton ahead again shortly after the interval from Jaouen Hadjam’s cut-back. A Rayan Cherki free-kick went in off Vitor Reis in the 72nd minute to bring City level again.
Jason Steele saved Kovacic’s shoot-out attempt, but Geronimo Rulli stopped efforts from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk. City advanced after manager Enzo Maresca had made nine changes to his starting side.
The League Cup quarter-finals will pair Liverpool with Bournemouth and City with third-tier Bradford. Bournemouth earned their place by defeating Aston Villa 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium.
Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Fulham and will host Sunderland, who defeated Brentford 3-2. Fourth-tier Fleetwood, who eliminated Arsenal on penalties on Tuesday, await the winner of Thursday’s Everton-Newcastle tie.
