Sandipon Garg bail granted in Zubeen case; release formalities pending
The Sandipon Garg bail petition was allowed by the Gauhati High Court in Guwahati on Friday, October 16, in the case concerning singer Zubeen Garg's death. The suspended Assam Police deputy superintendent is the singer's cousin and faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Justice Rajesh Mazumdar heard the petition and granted relief, according to reports. Defence lawyer Anan Kumar Bhuyan said the detailed judgment was still awaited, leaving the grounds for the decision unclear.
Bhuyan said procedures required for release had yet to be completed. With the High Court closing from Saturday, Sandipon's release was expected after the Durga Puja holidays, reports said.
Separate challenge to charge sheet
The Sandipon Garg bail decision comes while a separate plea asking the High Court to quash the charge sheet against him remains under consideration. The two proceedings concern different requests before the court.
Zubeen died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, after going into the sea. He had travelled there for the fourth North East India Festival, and Assam investigators subsequently arrested seven people in connection with his death.
Another accused, co-singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta, secured bail on October 9. Her bail involved a ₹50,000 bond and two sureties for the same amount, according to reports.
The singer's two personal security officers received bail in a separate disproportionate assets case on September 23. They nevertheless remained in custody in the death case.
Investigations in Assam and Singapore reached differing positions on the death. Singapore police found no evidence of foul play, and a Singapore coroner treated it as an accidental drowning; Assam authorities maintained their allegations and said the overseas findings would not determine the proceedings in the state.
