Mallikarjun Kharge on Election Commission: Congress Chief Warns of Dictatorship
Mallikarjun Kharge on Election Commission has intensified the political debate over the functioning of the Election Commission of India, with the Congress national president accusing the government of undermining democratic institutions and raising concerns over the future of adult franchise in the country.
Addressing supporters and opposition leaders, Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Congress and its allies were fighting against what he described as “injustice”. He alleged that the government was attempting to weaken the democratic rights secured by citizens after Independence.
Kharge also levelled serious allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), claiming that the poll panel was not functioning independently.
According to the Congress president, the CEC was acting as a “puppet of the government” and taking decisions according to the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Mallikarjun Kharge Accuses Government of Undermining Democracy
Speaking on the ongoing political battle, Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the government was attempting to weaken the adult franchise that Indian citizens received after Independence.
Adult franchise, or the right of eligible citizens to vote, is one of the central pillars of India's democratic system. Kharge argued that any attempt to undermine the electoral process could have serious consequences for democracy.
The Congress chief maintained that the opposition would continue to raise its voice against what it considers to be attacks on democratic institutions.
Kharge Raises Questions Over CEC's Independence
A major part of Mallikarjun Kharge's remarks focused on the Election Commission and the role of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Kharge alleged that the CEC was acting at the government's direction and claimed that decisions were being influenced by the political leadership. He specifically named Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah while making the allegation.
The Congress president's comments come amid an ongoing political confrontation between the ruling establishment and opposition parties over electoral processes and the functioning of constitutional institutions.
