Mamata Banerjee Detention Sparks Strong Reaction From TMC
The Mamata Banerjee detention in Delhi on Saturday drew a sharp reaction from Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh, who accused Delhi Police of adopting an “undemocratic” approach and demanded the immediate release of the former West Bengal Chief Minister.
Banerjee was among several opposition leaders detained during demonstrations linked to protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and allegations surrounding voter-list revisions. Reuters reported that hundreds of protesters and multiple opposition leaders were detained as security restrictions were imposed across parts of Delhi.
#WATCH | Kolkata, West Bengal: On the detention of Former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh says, "The way the Delhi police has detained Mamata Banerjee today is a fascist and undemocratic approach. We completely oppose this. They have to immediately release Mamata Banerjee. She was leaving the residence peacefully for the protest... All other MPs were there; they were put in a prison van and taken on a tour of all of Delhi... They are employing completely fascist methods in Delhi to suppress the movement against 'vote-chori'. We condemn this."

Kunal Ghosh Condemns Delhi Police Action
Speaking in Kolkata, Kunal Ghosh strongly criticised the detention.
He said:
“The way the Delhi police has detained Mamata Banerjee today is a fascist and undemocratic approach. We completely oppose this.”
The description of the police action as “fascist” was Ghosh’s political characterisation of the incident.
He also demanded Banerjee’s immediate release, saying she had been leaving her residence peacefully to participate in the protest.
TMC Leaders Also Detained
Several senior Trinamool Congress leaders were also detained during the Delhi protests, including Derek O’Brien, Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal, Saket Gokhale and others, according to reports.
Ghosh alleged that detained MPs were placed inside police vehicles and driven around Delhi rather than being allowed to proceed with their protest.
Protest Linked to Election Commission Row
The protests were organised around demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Opposition parties and protest organisers have alleged that voter-list changes amount to “vote chori”. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of politically motivated manipulation and maintained that the revision process is intended to verify electoral rolls.
Delhi Police Cites Law and Order Concerns
Delhi Police had imposed extensive restrictions ahead of the protest, including preventive detentions, barricading and movement controls.
Authorities said the measures were taken to prevent large-scale mobilisation and maintain public safety and law and order. More than 1,000 people had reportedly been detained across Delhi ahead of the main demonstration.
TMC Demands Immediate Release
Ghosh said the TMC “completely opposes” the detention and accused authorities of attempting to suppress the movement.
The Mamata Banerjee detention has added to the political confrontation surrounding the Election Commission, with opposition parties condemning the police action while authorities maintain that restrictions were necessary to manage the protest and maintain order.
