England's Mark Swan celebrates after winning the first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in the Men's Lightweight Para Powerlifting event.

England's Mark Swan claimed the first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after a dramatic finish in the Men's Lightweight Para Powerlifting competition.

Swan produced a personal-best lift of 222kg on his second attempt—more than three times his body weight—to finish level on 153.9 points with Nigeria's experienced lifter Roland Ezuruike heading into the final round.

Both athletes failed on their final lift, leaving the scores tied and creating confusion over the final standings. Moments later, Swan was officially declared the gold medallist.
Reflecting on the dramatic finish, Swan admitted he initially believed he had finished third.

"I came back off the third lift and I actually thought, 'Well, I've got bronze'. My coach said, 'Oh, good job on gold'. I was like, 'Yeah?'. It didn't make any sense. I thought they were winding me up."

The victory marked a memorable start to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games for England. Meanwhile, Nigeria dominated the women's Para Powerlifting event, securing both the gold and silver medals
