Nethra Kumanan Clinches Historic Sailing Bronze at Asian Games 2026

Two-time Olympian Nethra Kumanan scripted a memorable chapter in Indian sailing on Friday, October 2, by winning the bronze medal in the Women’s Dinghy event at the 2026 Asian Games in Gamagori, Japan.

The 29-year-old sailor from Chennai produced a determined performance in challenging conditions to finally secure a continental medal after a long wait.

Dramatic Finish in High-Wind Conditions

The medal was decided in a tense finale amid tricky and high-wind conditions off the Gamagori coast. Kumanan faced an early setback in the final stage after a tactical error at the start of one of the races temporarily affected her position in the standings.

However, the Indian sailor responded strongly under pressure and remained in contention for the podium.

In the decisive final race, Kumanan finished level on net points with Hong Kong’s Stephanie Louise Norton. The bronze medal ultimately went to Kumanan after the tie was settled through the applicable head-to-head tie-break criteria.

Thailand Takes Gold

Thailand’s Sophia Montgomery dominated the competition to claim the gold medal with five net points.

Singapore’s debutant Jania Ang secured the silver medal with 13 points, while Kumanan completed the podium with bronze after her dramatic battle with Norton.

Kumanan Adds to India’s Sailing Success

Sailing uses a low-score system, with athletes accumulating points according to their finishing positions across races. The sailor with the lowest net score after the designated races takes the highest position.

Kumanan’s bronze marks another significant achievement in her international career and highlights India’s growing presence in competitive sailing and water sports.

Her performance in Gamagori also underlines the importance of resilience and tactical execution in sailing, where changing wind conditions and race-day decisions can dramatically alter the standings.

As the sailing events conclude at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, Nethra Kumanan’s bronze provides India with a significant podium moment and adds another medal to the country’s campaign.
