Nicki Minaj rally appearance backs Republicans in Michigan
A Nicki Minaj rally appearance in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday brought the rapper alongside US President Donald Trump as she urged voters to support Republican candidates before November's midterm elections. She addressed supporters and expressed admiration for the president.
Minaj described Trump's return to office as a source of renewed optimism and encouraged the audience to back his party's candidates. She also emphasised Michigan's importance to the campaign.
Trump welcomed her support and praised her intelligence and appearance during the event. Her participation brought an entertainment figure into a closely watched political contest in the state.
The visit also generated speculation about a possible administration role after White House Communications Director Steven Cheung shared a video with Minaj on X. His caption suggested she could become White House press secretary, but the reports did not announce an appointment.
Campaign visit follows social media suggestion
The Nicki Minaj rally appearance followed her journey to Michigan with Trump and Cheung aboard Air Force One. Cheung recorded a conversation with her during the flight and posted it ahead of the event.
In that exchange, she praised Trump's approach to the economy and referred to his business background. Her comments were expressions of political support rather than an independent assessment of economic performance.
The press secretary position had become vacant after Katie Zacharia left following five days in office, according to reports. Cheung's post prompted discussion of Minaj as a possible replacement without establishing that she had been selected.
The Michigan event took place a day after former president Barack Obama campaigned in Detroit with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Republican Mike Rogers is contesting the same Senate race.
Minaj had previously appeared with Trump at White House events. Sunday's rally extended that public association into the midterm election campaign.
