Harsh Vihar building collapse leaves one dead, another feared trapped
The Harsh Vihar collapse at an under-construction building in northeast Delhi on Sunday evening left one person dead, while another was feared trapped, according to the latest account in the reports. Rescue agencies continued searching the debris.
Earlier reports had described two people as missing. One body was subsequently reported recovered, with teams still working to locate the other person believed to have been inside.
Emergency services received information about the collapse in the early evening. The Delhi Fire Service deployed six fire tenders, while police and National Disaster Response Force teams joined the search.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority was also involved. Officials said local inquiries and relatives' concerns had indicated that two men working at the property might have been caught beneath the rubble because their phones could not be reached.
Cause of structural failure under investigation
Police said the ground floor was an older structure and construction had been taking place on the first floor. The precise circumstances behind the Harsh Vihar collapse had not been established.
A senior police officer said the owner had been identified and located, and legal proceedings had begun. The account did not provide further details of those proceedings.
Delhi ministers Kapil Mishra and Ashish Sood visited the site. Mishra suggested that work to install a new lintel may have caused the structure to give way, bringing down the floor beneath it.
That explanation remained a preliminary account rather than a final finding. Mishra said the circumstances would be investigated and that relevant agencies had been mobilised for rescue work.
He also raised concerns about unauthorised construction in connection with recent collapses elsewhere in the city. Sunday's rescue operation continued as officials sought to establish what had happened at the Harsh Vihar property.
