PM Modi Praises Bengal’s Rich Yogic Tradition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted West Bengal’s profound contribution to the global yoga movement while addressing the International Yoga Day celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road. He praised the people of Kolkata and Bengal for their commitment to cleanliness through the “Swachhata se Swagat” initiative and described the state as a sacred land deeply connected to India’s spiritual and yogic traditions.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister paid tribute to great spiritual figures associated with Bengal, including Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, and Lahiri Mahasaya. He noted that Swami Vivekananda introduced yoga to the world and that Bengal has long been a center for spiritual awakening and yogic excellence.

Modi also reflected on the teachings of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, who believed that human identity is shaped through connection with the world rather than isolation. He said this philosophy embodies the true essence of yoga, which promotes harmony, unity, and a deeper understanding of oneself and others.

Highlighting this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the Prime Minister stressed that yoga is not limited to physical exercise or any particular age group. Instead, it serves as a source of consciousness, energy, balance, and inner strength throughout life.

He emphasized that healthy ageing should not be viewed solely as a concern for senior citizens. According to Modi, yoga enables individuals to maintain flexibility, energy, and resilience against lifestyle diseases at every stage of life. He called for a mindset where people aspire to become more flexible, energetic, and healthier as they grow older.

The Prime Minister further noted that regular yoga practice helps individuals understand their bodies and minds better, leading to improved self-management, reduced stress, and enhanced overall well-being. He described yoga as a lifelong journey of growth that empowers people to unlock their full potential regardless of age.

Concluding his address, Modi said yoga has the power to unite humanity and foster a healthier, more harmonious world, making it an essential way of life for people across generations.
