PM Modi Congratulates Mirabai Chanu on Asian Games Silver

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu after she won the silver medal in the Women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya.

Chanu secured the silver with a total lift of 198kg, registering 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk. The result gave her a maiden Asian Games medal after narrowly missing the podium at Hangzhou 2023.

Reacting to the achievement, PM Modi described it as a “special Silver” and congratulated Chanu for her performance. He said her determination and consistency continue to inspire the nation, adding that India is proud of her and extending his best wishes for her future endeavours.

The silver medal also marked an important moment for Indian weightlifting, ending a 28-year wait for an Asian Games medal in the sport since Karnam Malleswari's 1998 podium finish.

Chanu’s latest achievement adds an Asian Games silver to an already decorated international career that includes an Olympic silver medal, World Championship honours and multiple Commonwealth Games titles.
