PM Modi Celebrates India-Australia Sports Bond at MCG

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the enduring sporting relationship between India and Australia during his visit to the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), describing cricket as a shared passion that unites the people of both nations beyond competition.

Addressing a gathering at the historic venue, PM Modi said that stepping into the MCG evokes two emotions for every Indian—the excitement of the legendary India-Australia cricket rivalry and the realization that cricket is far more than a game for both countries.

"Today is not about last-over pressure. It is about the joy of sport, the warmth of India-Australia friendship, and the energy of future champions," the Prime Minister said after interacting with children participating in cricket, kabaddi, and Australian Rules football.

He praised the enthusiasm and confidence of the young athletes, saying their performances reflected a bright future for sports in both nations.

PM Modi also recalled his previous visits with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, noting that cricket has always been a natural bridge between the two leaders. He highlighted the presence of cricket legends Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar, describing them as symbols of determination, resilience, and excellence.
Emphasizing India's sporting transformation, the Prime Minister said the Khelo India programme has opened opportunities for talented youngsters from villages, small towns, and ordinary families, ensuring that sporting excellence is no longer limited to major cities.

Looking ahead, PM Modi reiterated India's ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and its continued efforts to secure the 2036 Olympic Games. He noted that Brisbane's hosting of the 2032 Olympics and India's aspirations would contribute to the creation of world-class sporting infrastructure and inspire future generations.

The Prime Minister concluded by stating that sports have become a powerful pillar of India-Australia cooperation, strengthening people-to-people ties while encouraging youth participation, excellence, and global collaboration.
