President Prabowo Says He Copied PM Modi's Policies
Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a community event in Jakarta, describing himself as a "great admirer" of the Indian leader and revealing that he had adopted several of Modi's governance policies.
Speaking before an audience, Prabowo said he did not wish to interfere in India's domestic politics but wanted to acknowledge his admiration for Prime Minister Modi.
"I don't want to be involved in domestic Indian politics. I'm a friend of all Indians, but I want to admit one thing... I am a great admirer of Narendra Modi ji," he said.
Reflecting on his political journey, Prabowo noted that he contested five general elections and lost four before becoming President of Indonesia.
Drawing laughter from the audience, he remarked that he had closely studied Prime Minister Modi's governance model before assuming office.
"Even before I became president, I studied the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and because there are no copyright, I copied many of his policies. Prime Minister Modi graciously allowed me to copy his policies, so I cannot be sued in any court," he joked.
Prabowo also highlighted the centuries-old cultural and historical ties between India and Indonesia, saying Indonesians have much to learn from India's experience.
"Our civilisation and culture are strongly influenced by Indian civilisation. Around 50% of our language comes from Sanskrit, and many of our names are Sanskrit names.
Therefore, there is this closeness, and we welcome closer cooperation," he said.
His remarks underscored the growing strategic partnership between India and Indonesia, with both nations expanding cooperation in trade, defence, maritime security, technology, connectivity, and cultural exchanges across the Indo-Pacific region.
