PM Modi Inaugurates Pune Metro Pink Line, Launches Phase II Expansion
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the Pune Metro Pink Line and laid the foundation stone for four new corridors under Phase II, saying expansion of urban transport infrastructure would support economic growth and improve ease of living.
The metro projects inaugurated and launched on November 3 are worth around ₹21,800 crore, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
23-Km Pink Line Connects Hinjewadi With Central Pune
The newly inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3, or Pink Line, stretches approximately 23 km and has been constructed at a cost of more than ₹8,300 crore.
It connects Maan with District Court Metro station, providing metro access between the Hinjewadi IT hub and Shivajinagar.
The corridor is expected to benefit thousands of IT professionals and other commuters while reducing dependence on private vehicles and easing road congestion.
Pink Line to Be Operated Entirely by Women
A notable feature of the new corridor is that its trains will be operated entirely by women train operators.
The project also includes a sustainability component, with around 30 per cent of its electricity requirement expected to come from solar power.
Modi Says Metro Network Has Expanded Sharply
Addressing the programme through video conferencing, Modi said India’s metro network had expanded significantly since 2014.
He said the operational network had grown from around 248 km before 2014 to about 1,200 km, while the number of cities with metro services had increased substantially.
The Prime Minister linked the expansion to the government’s focus on improving urban mobility, reducing commuting pressure and strengthening economic centres.
Pune Metro Phase II to Cost Around ₹13,500 Crore
Modi also laid the foundation stone for Pune Metro Phase II, which is estimated to cost around ₹13,500 crore.
The expansion comprises four corridors:
Line 2A: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk
Line 2B: Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi
Line 4: Kharadi to Khadakwasla
Line 4A: Nal Stop to Manik Baug
Together, the new corridors will improve connectivity across residential, commercial and IT hubs including Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Nanded City and Warje.
New Corridors to Integrate With Existing Network
The Phase II corridors are planned to connect with both the existing Pune Metro system and intercity bus services.
Interchange facilities are expected at locations including Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass, creating a more integrated transport network.
Modi Links Better Connectivity With Economic Growth
Modi said cities were not merely residential centres but major engines of economic activity.
He argued that faster, cleaner and better-connected public transportation would increase productivity while improving the daily lives of urban residents.
The Prime Minister said Pune’s role as an IT, education and manufacturing hub made stronger metro connectivity particularly important for its future growth.
Focus on Ease of Living and Transportation
Modi said the government had worked since 2014 to improve both ease of living and ease of transportation, especially for the urban middle class.
The Pune Metro Pink Line and Phase II expansion form part of that broader urban infrastructure strategy, combining mass transit expansion with renewable energy, integrated connectivity and reduced dependence on private vehicles.
