Rahul Gandhi Condemns Attack on Abhishek Banerjee, Calls It an Assault on Democracy

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has strongly condemned the alleged attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, describing the incident as "utterly reprehensible" and an attack on democratic values.

In a post shared on social media, Gandhi stated that an attack on an elected Member of Parliament goes beyond an individual and strikes at the very foundation of democracy.

"An attack on a Member of Parliament is not merely an assault on one individual—it is an assault on the very people who elected him, and on the democracy that is our shared legacy," Gandhi said.

The Congress leader further alleged that the incident reflects what he termed the "ugly face" of the BJP's politics of revenge, emphasizing that political differences should never lead to violence.

Calling for swift action, Gandhi urged both the Central Government and the West Bengal Government to take immediate steps against those responsible for the attack and ensure the safety of all public representatives, irrespective of political affiliation.

"The central government and the West Bengal government—both must take immediate action against the perpetrators, and ensure that no public representative, regardless of their party, ever has to worry about their safety," he said.

Expressing solidarity with the TMC leader, Gandhi extended his wishes for Abhishek Banerjee's speedy recovery and conveyed his support to the MP and his family.
