Riyad Mahrez Retires from International Football
Algeria star Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football following Algeria’s 2-0 defeat against Switzerland in the Round of 32 at the World Cup.
The 35-year-old winger ended his 12-year international career but is expected to continue playing club football for Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli.
"There were good times and difficult times as well, of course. That's part of a career," he said afterward.
"But representing Algeria has been a dream of mine ever since I was young, to play for my country. It's been an immense honor and a great source of pride."
He bid farewell after 40 goals abd 45 assists in 119 caps, finishing as Algeria's second-most capped player and second all-time top scorer.
He led them to 2019 Africa Cup of Nations triumph contributed three goal involvements (two goals, one assist) in the World Cup.
