Silver Against the Odds! Murali Sreeshankar Battles Injury to Clinch Long Jump Silver

India’s Murali Sreeshankar clinched the silver medal in the Men’s Long Jump at the 2026 Asian Games, producing a determined performance despite suffering an ankle injury during the competition.

Sreeshankar registered his best effort of 8.07 metres, putting himself firmly in medal contention early in the final. However, his challenge took a dramatic turn during his fourth attempt when he injured his ankle upon landing.

Unable to continue safely, the 27-year-old Indian athlete was forced to withdraw from his final two jumps. With ice and bandaging applied to his injured leg, Sreeshankar could only watch from the sidelines as his rivals attempted to surpass his 8.07m mark in the fifth and sixth rounds.

His earlier effort ultimately stood firm, earning him a second consecutive Asian Games silver medal after he finished runner-up at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
China’s Shi Yuhao won the gold medal, while Uzbekistan’s Anvar Anvarov finished just one centimetre behind Sreeshankar, narrowly missing out on silver.

Sreeshankar’s medal was particularly significant given the circumstances. Despite being unable to complete the competition after his injury, his early 8.07m jump proved enough to keep him on the podium.

The result adds another important chapter to the Indian long jumper’s international career, highlighting his resilience and ability to perform under intense pressure.
