Soumitra 86 – a legend and prodigy

by Kolkata Today

Cutting across film and society lines, Kolkata today remembered the legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee on his 86th birthday. A prodigy to all newborn and new generation actors Soumitra Chatterjee was reminisced through poems, art dialogues and creative thinking. Social media, radios, television echoed and re-echoed his recitation of luminaries like Tagore, Jibanananda and others. The winner of India’s highest film award Dada Saheb Phalke (2012) and Padmabhushan (2004), Chatterjee was a blue-eyed boy of the legendary film-maker Satyajit Ray and made a debut with Ray’s film Apur Sansar in 1959.  Chatterjee was unique by his own standards and a sole success in both commercial and non-commercial movies. He was awarded the Knight of Legion of Honour in 2018. He was rightly termed as ‘the man who changed the face of Indian cinema’.
