Torres' Magic Wins Spain the World Cup

Spain are FIFA World Cup champions once again after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 final at New York New Jersey on Sunday.

Luis de la Fuente's side dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the contest but had to wait until the 106th minute to finally break Argentina's resistance. After Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro's cross back into the danger area, Ferran Torres fired a first-time finish into the roof of the net, beating Emiliano Martinez to secure Spain's second FIFA World Cup title.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez produced a sensational performance with 12 saves, repeatedly denying Spain's attackers, including Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri and Nico Williams. However, he could do little to stop Torres' decisive strike in extra time.

The defending champions suffered a major setback when midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card at the end of normal time. Argentina also endured defensive injury problems, with Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero both forced off during the match.

Despite entering the final unbeaten and having scored 19 goals during the tournament, Lionel Scaloni's side struggled to create opportunities against Spain's disciplined defence, managing their first shot only in extra time.

Spain continued to press throughout extra time, with both Nico Williams and Ferran Torres having goals ruled out before Torres finally found the breakthrough that crowned La Roja world champions for the second time in history.
