Xavi’s FC Barcelona have missed out on a place in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup Final after losing 3-2 to Real Madrid in a thoroughly entertaining semi-final in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.

Real Madrid needed extra time to book their place in the Spanish Super Cup final on Wednesday evening, edging FC Barcelona 3-2 after extra time in an action-filled meeting in Saudi Arabia.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side led twice on the night only to be pegged back by their Clasico rivals, before Fede Valverde gave them a third advantage that proved to be a bridge too far for FC Barcelona . Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema’s earlier goals had been levelled by Luuk de Jong and Ansu Fati respectively.

After the match Real Madrid coach Ancelotti said ,”The team was ready for these kinds of matches. It was always going to be a close match. We especially played well in the first half, we were effective from the back and on the counter. We made mistakes from tiredness but our counter attacks were efficient.”
