West Bengal Announces New DGP and Chief Secretary
With the West Bengal Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) set to retire on December 31,
the state government had been assessing options to finalize names who would succeed the two top
bureaucrats. Setting to rest discussion and guesses on the subject, both the names have been announced.
While the new Chief Secretary will be BP Gopalika, the new Director General of Police (DGP) will be Rajeev Kumar. These important administrative announcements were made today. The new positions would be filled after the current holders retire shortly in December.
The current West Bengal Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi is already on an extension. The 1988-batch IAS
officer’s term was extended by the government on June 28 earlier this year. As per sources, the current
additional chief secretary (home) Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika was among the frontrunners for the post.
He is a 1989 batch IAS officer. Rajeev Kumar IPS, former Kolkata Police commissioner, has been appointed as the state’s new Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG and IGP). He will succeed Manoj Malviya. Kumar is a 1989-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre and has earlier served as the additional DGP of the state Criminal
Investigation Department (CID).
