Suvendu Adhikari Claims No Fracture in Mamata Banerjee’s 2021 Injury, Announces CID Probe
Suvendu Adhikari has raised fresh questions over former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram, claiming that a medical report from March 2021 showed no evidence of a “fracture or dislocation”. The West Bengal Chief Minister said the matter would be investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The issue relates to an incident on March 10, 2021, when Mamata Banerjee sustained an injury during her election campaign in Nandigram. At the time, Banerjee said she had been injured amid a crowd near her vehicle. She was subsequently taken to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital for treatment and continued campaigning with her leg in a cast and using a wheelchair.
Suvendu Adhikari Raises Questions Over 2021 Injury
According to Suvendu Adhikari, the medical documents relating to Mamata Banerjee’s treatment in March 2021 did not record a fracture. He claimed that the report prepared by the treating doctors mentioned that there was no fracture.
Adhikari reportedly referred to a medical document from March 11, 2021, and said it contained no evidence of a fracture. Reports have also quoted him as saying that the document indicated there was no fracture or dislocation.
The Chief Minister made the allegations while referring to the events surrounding the 2021 Nandigram election campaign. He said he possessed the relevant documents and indicated that further details would be discussed after the ongoing by-election-related restrictions.
What Happened During the 2021 Election Campaign?
The controversy dates back to March 10, 2021, when Mamata Banerjee was campaigning in Nandigram ahead of the West Bengal Assembly election.
Banerjee had said at the time that she was injured after being surrounded by people while near her vehicle. She subsequently returned to Kolkata and was admitted to SSKM Hospital. Contemporary reports said she was discharged with her left foot in a cast and later campaigned in a wheelchair.
The circumstances surrounding the injury also prompted scrutiny during the 2021 election. An Election Commission report by special observers concluded that the injury was accidental and found no evidence that it resulted from an attack.
Suvendu Adhikari Says CID Will Investigate
The latest development is the announcement of a CID investigation into the matter. Suvendu Adhikari has said that the medical records will be examined as part of the probe.
Reports indicate that Adhikari has also said he would make further comments after October 9, following the relevant electoral process. He has linked the timing of his comments to the ongoing by-election and the Model Code of Conduct.
The CID investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the 2021 injury, the medical records available at the time and the claims made publicly about the nature of the injury.
