Chef Pankaj Bhadouria, television host and winner of the first season of MasterChef India, recently shared 10 practical microwave hacks that can transform the way you use this appliance. 1. Boil potatoes quickly
You can get perfectly boiled potatoes in just four minutes. Wash them thoroughly, wrap in cling film, and microwave until soft and ready to peel.
2. Soften refrigerated dough
Leftover atta or maida dough can be revived easily. Microwave it for about 30 seconds to restore its soft, fresh texture.
3. Extract more juice from citrus fruits
Heat lemons or similar fruits in the microwave for 30 seconds to make them softer and easier to squeeze, helping you get more juice.
4. Poach eggs without oil
Crack an egg into a microwave-safe bowl and heat for around 30 seconds to get a quick, oil-free poached egg.
5. Peel garlic effortlessly
Wrap garlic cloves in cling film and microwave briefly. The heat loosens the skin, making peeling quick and easy.
6. Dehydrate herbs in minutes
Make your own dried herbs like kasuri methi, mint, or even rose petals by microwaving them until dry, then crushing lightly.
7. Revive stale bread
Sprinkle a little water over bread slices and microwave for 10–15 seconds to bring back their softness and freshness.
8. Make oil-free chips
Thinly slice vegetables like potatoes, beetroot, or apples, lightly grease the tray, sprinkle salt, and microwave for about four minutes to make healthy, crispy chips.
9. Sterilise kitchen essentials
Use your microwave to sterilise items like baby bowls, glass bottles, or kitchen cloths by heating them for about four minutes.
10. Toast nuts and seeds
Microwave nuts and seeds for about a minute to get a quick, crunchy snack without using oil.
